Re: Child support for [children’s first names]
[First name],
Since our separation on [date], [children’s first names] live [mainly with me / in shared custody]. To date, no child support has been set.
Based on the Child Support Determination Form, our respective incomes (mine $[amount], yours $[amount]) and the custody time, the basic support amounts to approximately $[amount] per month, plus special expenses [childcare, school fees, activities] shared in proportion to our incomes.
Please send me your most recent notice of assessment and income documents by [date] so that we can confirm the amount. We may then sign an agreement and have it homologated, through the Homologation Assistance Service if we agree.
Failing an agreement, I will apply to the court to have child support fixed.

Drafting notes
- Parents owe support to their children (art. 585 C.C.Q.); the amount is set under the Quebec Regulation respecting the determination of child support payments.
- Support may be claimed retroactively in certain circumstances, but delay in claiming may limit retroactivity: act promptly.
- Once ordered, support is in principle collected by Revenu Québec.
