Drafting notes
- A debtor who pays is entitled to an acquittance (Civil Code of Québec): the tenant may demand one.
- For a dwelling, the landlord may require no more than one month’s rent in advance and no security deposit; there is therefore no “deposit refund” to record at the end of the lease.
- A final release signed without reservation may bar the landlord from later claiming other amounts: state any reservation expressly.
- The acquittance does not replace the RL-31 slip, which the landlord must issue each year for the solidarity tax credit.
